Pennsylvania state has held the reputation as the number one producer in the nation of mushrooms but very few people associate wine with the region. However, grape production in the state is fifth. Their production of this crop normally yields close to 20 billion dollars. With the growth of the grape industry wine is fast becoming a leading entity. Every year more and more wineries are dotting the countryside and making their mark in the industry in the US as a leading wine producer.
Here is a list of five top wineries in the state.
1) Brookmere Winery and Vineyard Inn located at 5369 SR 655, Belleville, PA 17004
Brookmere Winerey is located in a very quint 19th century stone barn. They have a gift shop on location and many lovely area’s to picnic in. The entire area is very picturesque which makes it the perfect place to spend an afternoon.
Brookmere’s history is extremely long and dates back to the prior to the Civil War. Their wines are excellent with a reasonable price tag.
Their Brookmere Autumn Gold is a delightful blend of blend of Vidal and Seyval, French hybrids which produces a very nice sweet wine. A bottle will retail for approximately $8.
Another must try wine is their Autumn Red Dry which retails for $15.50. It is a blend of blend of Cabernet Franc and Chambourcin.
2) Mount Nittany Vineyards and Winery located at 350 Houser Road, Centre Hall, PA 16828
This is a family owned and operated winery that has won much acclaim from the wine community.
They offer many superb wines that are sold on the premises. They have an outstanding dry Merlot that is filled with the flavor and aroma of black cherry. Another favorite is their Tailgate Red which a wonderful semi dry.
3) Rose Bank Winery located at 258 Durham Road (Rt. 413), Newtown, PA 18940
This wonderful history winery is like stepping back in time. The surroundings are fabulous. The buildings and house date back to the 1700’s. The entire location is very picturesque and well worth an afternoon visit.
Rose Bank is a long standing winery that makes some excellent choices. One of their unique wines is their Cranberry wine. This is an excellent fruit wine. It is not too sweet and just right on the tongue. They make a vast array of fruit wines that I strongly encourage you to try.
Their more traditional wines are also excellent. Their Summer Sangria is excellent.
4) Shade Mountain Vineyards located at 16140 Route 104, Middleburg, PA 17842
Shady Mountain Vineyard that offers full tours of their 19th century barn that houses their winery. They provide free tastings of their products. The ground are lovely with a pond and exceptional scenery.
This winery produces some very nice wines at reasonable prices. They Dry Syrah is more then acceptable. It also features a unique peppery finish that is quite intense. A bottle retails for $13.99. Another exceptional wine is their William’s Port Wine which is a very sweet desert wine. It retails for 15.99.
5) Oak Spring Winery is located at RD 1 Box 612, Altoona, PA
This winery is owned by a husband and wife team who originally produced wine out of their garage and from that was born Oak Spring. Soon they were booming and they have managed to build a wonderful reputation for very fine wine.
They offer tours of their lovely winery and tastings. There is also a gift store on the premises.
They have a wonderfully crisp Pinot Gris that retails for $12.95 per bottle. They also produce a very nice Cabernet Sauvignon which retails for $20.00.
